Trax Fax Interviews

THE TRAX FAX INTERVIEW WITH HARLAN HOWARD

Fourteen years and hundreds of “hit” songs after this Trax Fax Interview, Harlan Howard passed away on March 6, 2002. Harlan left a legacy of great songs for others to enjoy. Harlan also left the following words as a source of inspiration for future songwriters hoping to follow in his footsteps.

TF: You‟re one of the greatest songwriters Nashville has ever known. Is there any one key you can point to that helped you get to where you are [as a songwriter?]

HH: Teachers, I had great teachers when I was a kid…Ernest Tubb, Floyd Tillman, and Cindy Walker.

Cindy never was a well-known singer, but she was probably the most prolific country songwriter I‟ve ever known. Cindy wrote with such class and finesse. Her rhymes really rhymed, her songs all made sense. I‟ve always been into class songs and class songwriters including Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin getting into Paul Simon, Gordon Lightfoot and Neil Diamond. And now-days I‟m a Bob McDill, Waylon Holyfield and Richard Lee fan. There are a bunch of neat writers around town. I like class songs and I‟d like to think because of that, I write class songs.

TF: So, find someone successful and get into their hip pocket and learn from them?

HH: Exactly.

TF: “Why Not Me” (The Judd‟s), “Somewhere Tonight” (Highway 101), all recent number one songs written or co-written by yourself and all by the “new generation” of country artists.
